Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in District of Columbia

Protecting Assets against Medical Cost

My parents are facing potentially steep medical cost due to illness that will require long term care.

Can we transfer their assets to protect their hard earned money? They can not afford nursing home but are to asset rich to afford medicaid.

If not is their away to use medicare for homecare?

Re: Protecting Assets against Medical Cost

I'm sorry for your tough situation. If you transfer the assets from them, I believe that there's a 3 yr. rule, which states that the money Medicaid will charge for 3 yrs. has to be paid to them, even though they now have no assets. Sorry; but it's the best I can do. Call Medicare for details...they may have homecare available!!
