In Ethiopia, fees for an advocate are limited at a maximum of 10% of the value of the thing disputed when the litigation concerns cash or property. This has been brought in by court decisions. When the amount in dispute is very large the percentage payable to the lawyer is reduced.

In other matters the Proclamation (the law) on attorneys just requires for payment to be fair and the method of calculation to be indicated in the agreement between the lawyer and the client. There has been no case on such types agreements for payment of an attorney. Methods of calculation, in addition to the method using percentage of the value in dispute, include fixed amount fees and calculation of fees per hour.
