can a witness's word alone convict a person or does there to be more evidence?

Yes. It will be up to the judge or jury to decide whether or not the witness is persuasive enough to convict. Generally, an eye witness with good recall who is not easily tripped up on a witness stand can convict someone without further evidence although other evidence will help.
