Legal Question in Business Law in Florida

In 1991 an artist and I agreed on an arrangement. I'd sell his art work

in return for a cut of the profit. A contract was signed. He in one

state, me in another.

He gave me copies of his artwork (multiple copies, same piece).

Time went on..sales never materialized. Nothing malicious. We were

young and entrepreneurial. Marriage, job changes, kids, multiple

moves....life. We lost touch.

Through the wonder of the internet, last year he found me, via email. Quick correspondence, "How's life..."..."How many kids you have...?"

Niceties.

He has brought up the artwork and desires his copies returned. For

the life of me, I can't find them. 7 or 8 states worth of moves. 18

years of time. I have no idea where they are.

He is requesting compensation of some sort.

What are his legal "rights"?. After this much time, can he request

compensation?

Not trying to skirt responsibility, but I think the economy has him

grasping at straws. We corresponded for about a year before he even

brought up the artwork.

Thank you

That's an interesting situation. I can see it from his perspective - you may have sold the art work and kept all of the proceeds. But I can also understand how it might have gotten lost in life's shuffle. The bottom line is, what did you agree to? I can't say what compensation, if any, he may be legally entitled to without looking at your agreement.
