Legal Question in Business Law in Florida

Copyright

I have been invited to speak on a subject in which a part of the speech could be a book review of a well known business book. I would give credit to the publisher and author and give the name of the book. The speaking will take place at a non-profit association for an industry. I will be using my own material as well and will be trading my time for some exposure. Is this a violation of the authors copyrights? Do I need his permision to use slides of some graphs and charts?

Re: Copyright

I am not a copyright lawyer so the general advice I will share with you may not be legally sound. Therefore, do not rely on it. That being said, so long as you give credit to the author and it is clear that you are using the information in the book as a reference for educational purposes, which appears to be the reason you are giving the speech. As concerns the graphs and charts, if you must use them I would make certain that the slides indicate the source from which you obtained the graphs and charts, and that they are clearly used for educational purposes and not for a commercial purpose. Odds are you will not be chased down by the author or publisher, assuming they somehow found out that you had made reference to their materials. Seek the advice of a copyright lawyer and good luck.
