former employeer wants severance overpayment back

My former employeer terminated me and then continued to pay my severance long after it was due to expire. I faxed letters to the VP in charge of my group for the first three overpayments and one letter to the corporate fax.

A year later I get a certifed letter from them claiming an audit revealed an overpayment to me and they want me to call and confirm receipt of the money and for me to repay the money.

I am still unemployeed and even if I were employed I could not afford to repay that much money... what is a boy to do?

They will have to file suit against you for the overpayment. They could also give you a bad reference for your next potential job. I am available to consult with you on this case.
