Legal Question in Business Law in Florida
Non-compete contract
After approximately one year of employment, my employer is requesting that I sign a non-compete contract. Can I refuse? If I were to sign it and then lose my job (i.e. am fired), it would be very difficult for me to work for another appraisal firm in the area. When I was hired, it was done under the premise that I bring in my own work. I have opened a branch office for my employer and thus far it has been relatively successful because of the new business I have brought in. What alternatives, if any, can I suggest?

Re: Non-compete contract
By non compete I assume you mean opening up your own business, not working for another company. Since you are in contact with his clients his request may be reasonable depending upon its extent.
