my painting company did some work for vollenteers of america in october... we still have not been paid....are there any laws that protect us....they owe 12,000.00 they say they have 120 days to pay..after that time has passed...what can we do?

The construction lien law will help enforce your payment rights, but the time deadlines to file a lien and the perfection requirements are very strict. One small error can defeat a construction lien. A lien is enforced much like a mortgage, through a foreclosure action, which is very effective. You need to look to perfect your lien rights ASAP.
Also, you should still have a breach of contract claim. But enforcing that claim will require a lawsuit and post-judgment collection actions (garnishment, seizure of personal property, etc.).
