Legal Question in Business Law in Florida

promised pay raises and defamation

If my employer says they will give me a raise after 90 days and they say that its not possible due to the current economic cirisis can they legally suspend my pay raise? Its a Hilton brand hotel so I dont see why they wouldnt be able to pay me. There was also a purse stolen from my hotel and management blamed it on me with no proof whatsoever. They would call me purse stealer jokingly as I came into work but i was very offended because i've never stolen anything. They launched an investigation which eventually proved my innocence..do you think i could file a defamation suit?

Re: promised pay raises and defamation

First, your employer is not legally obligated to give you pay raises. If they are in violation of a contractual agreement you may have a cause of action, but I doubt you are working under a contract which guarantees pay raises.

Second, in order to prevail on a defamation suit you have to have suffered damage, which you have not described. Plus, an employer has the right to investigate incidents which happen.
