Legal Question in Business Law in Florida

I recently went through a lengthy divorce that I initiated and my ex-wife is still trying to make my life miserable. My divorce was finalized in November of 2008. In December of 2008, I purchased a bar & grill in a small town that my ex-wife happens to own a business in. This bar & grill was an existing business that had been operating for years. To my suprise, the city tried to prevent me from doing business by making me apply for new permits, construction upgrades etc. They even ordered me to shut down due to not having enough sprinkler heads in the space in my center. After fighting for months with the local fire department, zoning officials and city hall, i finally opened and was harrassed by the police and "routine" inspections by city officials.. I finally had to shut down. Since that time, I found out that my ex-wife, along with a paralegal that worked for her divorce attorney, were resposible for everything. I have emails that they wrote to the mayor, police chief, fire inspector and zoning offiaials in the town telling them slanderous lies about me and asking them to prevent me from opening and/or shut me down. The mayor obliged her due to their longstanding relationship and I have the emails to prove it!

Do I have a case against the city and/or the people involved? I can't begin to tell you how much this has cost me..... No more business and unemployed.

Thanks! Don

Oh my. You may have a suit for defamation of character agaist the people who said FALSE things about you. If the statements were not false, though, and were just malicious to get the authorities after you, then no, no case.

You have no suit against the city unless you can show that they shut you down improperly.
