Legal Question in Business Law in Florida

Wedding favours

We have an idea to give out cd's with our favorite love songs at our wedding for wedding favours. Would this be illegal? I live in Georgia and the wedding will be in Florida.

Re: Wedding favours

It definitely would be illegal, unless you own the rights to the songs, or have express permission from the holder of the rights (often the publishing company). Essentially, it is stealing someone else's property - probably not the best thing to do at a wedding.

While I hate to be critical of another lawyer's response, the fact that you would be giving the CD's away instead of selling them has absolutely no bearing on the legal issues involved. Giving away CD's of music which you do not own can get you in the exact same trouble as selling it, and it is still theft. Simply stated, you don't have the right to copy and give away something that you do not own. This is basic, clear-cut law in this area. I suspect many of your guests would immediately realize this, and question what you have done.
