You are always entitled to proceed "pro se" (without an attorney). This is not always wise, but is always an option.
If you have signed a retainer agreement with an attorney, and you are not satisfied with his/her services, you can fire him/her. This attorney may, however, have a lien on any settlement or judgment you receive in the future.
