It is not illegal for your employer to tell you to stop speaking in Spanish, but it does sound pretty stupid for him to tell you to stop speaking Spanish to his Spanish speaking customers.

The prior post is not correct. It may very well be illegal for your employer to ask you not to speak to Spanish customers if there is no legitimate basis for the request. If you take a look at the EEOC "English only" policies are their site, they address this. I have also blogged on this issue on my employee rights blog www.takethisjobnshoveitblog.com. You may want to make a written complaint with your employer and if that does not work file a written complaint with the EEOC.
