Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Florida

We moved into a place that needed alot of work done to it, our land lord agreed on a yrs free rent and they supplied the materials !We moved in on july of 2009 and we are to have free rent til july of 2010! Well, today feb 24 2010 and she says we have 30 days and we have to move! is a verbal cotract legal? they din't supply hardly anything for materials , we did and they have backed out of the agreement and the land lord told my husband his wife wants to move her grandson in and that is the only reason for us having to move! can she legally do this and what can we do ?thank you for your time need to know asap because i'm in the middle of a custody battle to get my children and were to get them the month she wants us to move and if i have to it will cost me my kids!! thank you again ! stephanie

Verbal agreements about property are generally not enforceable. There are ways, however, to raise the issue about this promise, but it is not easy. She will need to evict you, so that will take some time, but I would start looking for somewhere else to live.

Well, this is why you need to get it in writing! Otherwise, how can you prove it? If you are a tenant that pays monthly, then the landlord can ask you to leave with 15 days notice. But here you do not pay anything. I would collect any information/receipts/logs of time spent on making the repairs. When you are served with the eviction lawsuit, you can choose to go to court to defend yourself against the eviction. You may also want to consider filing a claim against the landlord for their breach of the oral agreement and anything you may have lost in reliance on your oral agreement.
