Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Florida

Slander?

I just moved less than a mile from an upper first-class neighbor. My ex-neighbor who lived right nextdoor had a visit paid to him by a county representative of the EPA. He has been fined three times and has to replace all the plants he plowed down in a preserve he had no business touching. Now he is telling everyone that I/we (my ex-husband) called the EPA on him. (I had nothing to do with it.) Because he got caught, the EPA then investigated all the yards on the preserve, and now most of then are being fined, etc. I drove in there today, and people that normally wave at me, would not return my wave. My children still visit other children in the sub-division, and so I go there a lot. I'm sick of grown people jumping to conclusions without any supporting information, and repeating it to others. Can I sue this person for slander? I purposely stayed uninvolved with my neighbors because they act like they are in high school although they are all well-paid professionals and should know better.

What can I do?

Re: Slander?

You may have an action for slander, but the amount of money you could recover is probably not worth the effort.

Why not write a letter to your former neighbors explaining you had nothing to do with the problem. Those who are your friends will be satisfied with this, those who are not don't matter.
