Can I sue my college for losing my confidential infomation?

You may be able to sue the college if it disseminated confidential information...losing it though, what are your damages if it's lost and not "recovered" by someone other than the college?
Was it "lost" because someone negligently threw your documents in the trash, or was it "lost" because someone accidentally hit "delete" instead of "save" on their computer? There is a big difference.
