A 'bright line rule' is a concept, not one particular rule. Appellate courts establish criteria under which certain actions may occur, such as the automobile exception to the search warrant requirement, and those criteria do not require the trial court to weigh factors in its discretion, but rather supply a formula to guide the trial court in its decisions. Such a formula is typically referred to as a 'bright line rule.'
