how many times do you have to ask for discovery from 0pposing council before you must get a notice motion

generally there is no set amount of times you have to request compliance. Once the deadline for a Response has passed a Motion to Compel MAY be filed in most jurisdictions. However, it is most always in your best interest to attempt to resolve the matter without filing the Motion. Most judges do not want to hear how you can't resolve discovery issues.
If the other party is not represented by an attorney then you may need to file the Motion and set a hearing to allow the judge the opportunity to "motivate" the other side.
