Then can be in most circumstances because technology has made them reliable, but you should try to always have a policy of getting/exchanging originals. Your agreements can provide that you can start performing a contract upon receipt of an email or fax acceptance, but that an original should be mailed withing a short number of days so you can keep it for your records. Many lawyers keep electronic copies of their files these days, but they also keep signed original documents because the original, if not tampered with, will always be considered as better evidence than a copy in court.
