Legal Question in Consumer Law in Florida
Does Company Policy overule State Law?
I am English and over 21. I went to buy wine from a retailer and was asked for ID. I produced a UK driving license photocard with recent picture and date of birth, proving my age. I even backed this up with a International Student Identity Card (ISIC) but they refused both as legitimate ID and said it was company policy that only a US driving license or ''state card'' was excepted along with national passports.
I queried this with the Sheriff's office and was told that as long as the ID was clear and had the date of birth on, it should be excepted.
I do have my British Passport with me, but am told by our Government that it strongly recommends against passports being taken out and used as ID. Our Driving license which is recognized around the world should be the main source of ID (outside immigration).
I assume the Sheriff department were instructing me from Florida Law but this company policy obviously over rules this law. So the question is simply this; Is this not either a breach of Florida Law or even discrimination?
If you can help it would be much obliged.
