Can a store force you to wait while an employee checks your receipt against purchases before allowing you to leave the store?

Yes. If they feel that there has been either a discrepancy or something dishonest has taken place, they can check your receipt. Many stores do it all the time for all consumers such as the warehouse stores including Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's. If you do not like it, you have the option of shopping elsewhere.
