Legal Question in Consumer Law in Florida

Hurricane Damage

My neighbor and I share a custom built brick mailbox. Following one of the hurricanes, the crews hired by the city were picking up limbs and debris. In the process, they bulldozed our joint mailbox to the ground. I've contacted the city and they passed my concern (along with the bill I paid to have the brick mailbox rebuilt) to the firm which did the limb and debris cleanup. The firm responded: ''We have assessed your claim and we cannot substantiate your claim as being our responsibility.'' I have sent them additional photos taken just after the damage ocurred and sent a follow up letter asking for a response. So far I've heard nothing.

How can I go about recovering the reconstruction costs for the brick mailbox?

Re: Hurricane Damage

Depending upon the cost to repair the mailbox, you might want to file a small claim action against the contractor that destroyed the mailbox. If you speak with the Clerk of Court for your local county court, they should be able to provide you with forms to fill out, and the amount to file the action, and you can represent yourself. Prior to filing a small claim you might also want to get an attorney to send a demand letter to the contractor to get them to agree to reimburse you.
