Can I legally make a copy of a music cd which I have purchased as long as I do not sell it?

Technically, no, copying the CD is copyright infringement. However, it is generally accepted that you may make a copy for your own personal use. For example, you can make an extra copy to listen to in your car. Note that it is the act of copying the CD which is illegal, so hypothetically, you would be equally liable if you gave away the copy or if you sold it. But, the copyright police are not likely to come serving you with a lawsuit for making a single copy to give to a friend. If you start making MANY copies, you will be in trouble.
