Do you have a contract. If not, you should still be able to recover.

What does the agreement between you and the shipper say? Generally, they have a responsibility to take care of the goods entrusted into their care. If goods get lost are damaged, they should be responsible to you for the value. Oftentimes, the liability is limited by the terms of the shipping documents. Read them carefully. If they refuse to reimiburse you for the lost crate and its contents, then seek one of the remedies available which includes filing suit in the appropriate court.
