Legal Question in Consumer Law in Florida
I recently hired a general contractor to tile the kitchen floor and backsplash. The sub-contractor tile men have worked 2 days out of 6 and are half done. I didn't expect them to work Thanksgiving Day but they left my stove in the dining room. I haven't heard from anyone since last Wednesday. Can I cancel the contract and withhold the final half payment?

If your general contractor is licensed (you should have checked this before you hired him), call him and tell him that he has 3 days to finish this job, or you are filing a complaint with the Florida Licensing Division AND cancelling the contract. Find a licensed person to finish the job. Do not pay the 1st guy any more money, until you consult with a lawyer. If your second contractor charges more than the amount held, you may be able to sue the first contractor for the difference. Document when and how you have tried to reach this guy, make notes of any conversation. Keep the original contract that you signed, do not give this to anyone, including the contractor.
