Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida
In advance, thank you for your time.
I am a resident of Florida and have been for 6 years. I recently took a new job after working a few different positions since being here and my employer and myself just received a wage garnishment order from Indiana (my previous state of residency) from 2009. I have not been made aware where it stems from or what entity I owe this money. I guess my questions is, does my FL employer have to abide by this and/or can I avoid the garnishment altogether?

That's really a question your employer needs to ask its lawyer, because the garnishment order is directed to it, not you. i don't see how a garnishment order issued in Indiana can be valid in Florida, unless its past due child support or alimony.
Prior to your employer being served with the writ, you should have been served with a copy and an opportunity to object to the garnishment. You should also consult with an attorney to review the status of this case and determine an appropriate action.
This is probably a sham. You need to have an attorney review and search the court records to see if a judgment was ever issued. It may be for someone else. If you don't clear it up now it will follow you wherever you go.
