Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Can anyone answer my question from 11/3/00?

I have received 2 letters in the past 2 weeks from a debt collector stating that I owe my previous apartment complex money. When we called to find out the details we were met by an extremely rude man who called us dishonest and losers. He stated that his client claims we skipped out on the last month rent and there were damages to the carpet our deposit did not cover. I have proof of the checks written for our last month rent but cannot disprove their claims about the carpet, only to say that it wasn't that bad as far as we were concerned. I can scan and e-mail copies of both letters and would like to know what options I have as I don't feel that I owe this money by any means. Also, my deposits with them included a security and pet deposit totalling $450.

Since I originally posted this question I received more harrassing phone calls but finally attained the receipt stating what I owe and it did not state they used my $450 deposit but only showed $200. Now they want to take me to court according to their most recent letter. HELP please!!
