Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida
I asked a handyman that I had used in the past to replace my irrigation pump. Upon inspection, he thought it might be able to be saved and wanted to have his landscapers take a look. While on site, he called me to tell me that the pump, indeed needed to be replaced. A couple of days later, I received a bill in the mail from the landscaping company for an exorbitant amount which included many hours beyond that required to replace a pump. I contacted the landscaping company and offered to pay a lower amount which I felt was fair but he rejected that offer and threatened to file a lien on my house. Should I pay the smaller amount without an agreement and what recourse does the landscaper have?

It is nearly impossible to answer this question without having all the facts. I strongly suggest you consult with an attorney in person. Many attorneys offer consultations at minimal or no costs.
Unless they have proof you authorized your handyman to hire them, you would not be responsible.
