Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

I had a collection agency call me today, claiming I had a bad check at a payday loan store from 2002. This may or may not be true as I have had a payday loan in the past, but thought they were all paid. I told the gentleman, i had no idea what he was talking about and he immediately got aggresive. He started to threaten legal action claiming check fraud. I told the agent that I have no problem paying the debt if he could provide some type of documentation (cancelled check) with my signature. He asked if I was ready to settle the debt, and I repeated my request for documentation. He then started asking if the social he had on me was correct, and if I had lived at a certain address and I said yes. He then told me a bunch of dates for the transaction, but I am still not recalling the debt. Once again I am not against paying the debt if it is mine, but I really want to be sure it is mine. What avenue do I take to ensure it is mine?
