collection agency letter 17yr old debt

i was just recently contacted via mail by a collection agency about a bill from a furniture store in california from 1989, 17 years ago.

i live in florida now, can this collection agency hurt me financially or legally with something that is 17 years old...or can they affect or hurt my credit now..and what can i do......?

Assuming all you say is accurate, then the statuteof limitations bars legal action on the debt. Collection activities violate the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.Should you be injured by reason of the actions taken by the agent you will have a legal remedy. The mere demand is a violation of the act..so you wish to consult with counsel now.
