Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida
Collection for a hospital bill
I was in the hopital for 2 weeks about 3 years ago. The bill is 39,000. I haven't made a payment on it. I'am 63, I get a little from SS, drawing from husband SS. Husband left me 6 years ago and I don't get anything else. I do a little house cleaning but it doen't take care of my bills, I'm way over in debt 18,000. I'm not in good health. If I could, I would pay on it. I don't own anything except the 1980 trailer. This has been turn over to a lawyer which said they will file a lawsuit againt me in ten days. Don't know what to do. I can't pay.

You have several choices and four come to mind: 1 - you can call the hospital and try to explain your situation and offer to make monthly payments of a minimal amount (perhaps $5 - $10); 2 - you can call the hospital and try to explain your situation and ask them to write off your debt under the Hill-Burton Act wherein all hospitals are required to give a certain amount of free medical care to indigent clients; 3 - you can go to court and explain your situation to the judge who will then try to broken a reasonable payment arrangement; or 4 -you can ignore the lawsuit and allow a judgment to be entered against you. Your social security wages are protected against garnishment as is your homestead.
