can a credit card company garnish my wages and threaten such action against me?

Yes. However, in order to do so they need to successfully sue you first and then obtain a writ of garnishment.

Do they have a judgment against you? How long has it been - 5 years is void under contract law if they have not sued you prior. If they have no judgment - then no writ will be issued.
