Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Credit Company debt

I received a summons and copy of lawsuit from the Assignee of MBNA. I have 20 days to respond and do not know what to do. There is a note that says I can contact attorney to avoid going to court and work something out. This is a debt from 2001 or 2002 that I no longer could pay on due to losing my massage practice after Sept 11th. I called the company on multiple occassions back then and they were not willing to work anything out with me. I went to a lawyer to consult on this issue in 2007 he said just ignore the lawsuit because I didn't have anything for them to take. Now it looks like they might garnish my wages if I do not respond. How do I handle this? I also was not sent any of the original paperwork. I remember the debt being somewhere around 5000.00 but there has been an award of 8400.00. I think I need a lawyer, but do not know where to begin. What can I do to rectify this?

Yes you need a lawyer and we can help. Perhaps we can negotiate this or contemplate a bankruptcy.
