Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida
I have custody of a granddaughter because the mother is mentally ill and a drug abuser. She has never contributed to the childs medical or support. Several months age the daugghter came tom my husband and I asking that we help her get her life together. She was and is unemployed and has applied for SSD. She is waiting for a hearing on that issue. While she was living with us we paid some bills for her with the understanding that sge would repay when she got her sSSD. The rules of the house were specific and they were violated. She received a check from social security for a claim not poaid correctly from 1995-2000 for over $20,000.00 She left the home without paying her bill. She will also recieve a substantial inheritance soon from a deceased grandfather. Is it possible to get child support for her child that she has avoided to date? She worked for ten years qualifying for SSD but her history was certainly not stable. She had been arrested for domestic violence, stalking and harrassment, and for kicking the window out of the back seat of a squad car. She had been evicted from her apartments, had a car repossessed, and has stolen utilities. I am a disabled vet and would like to have some money for her child for school before she spends it on drugs.

If the mother is mentally ill then I would apply to the court for guardianship over her. Once you have that, you can then be in control of any funds that she receives and can also place her in housing and medical treatment.
The work that you do for her can be deducted from the fees as services.
