US Debt

I'm attempting to settle a student loan though the collection agency. What information have they the right to collect from me to establish a payment plan for this govt debt? i.e. Bank info, empoyer etc.

They can ask, but you don't have to tell them. However, there's no requiremnet that they settle with you, or negotiate at all. They can't actually do anything with the information they collect unless they get a judgment against you.

At this stage, getting information from you helps them decide whether to accept your payment plan. They have a duty to collect as much of the money as possible as soon as possible, so the more information they have, the better decision they'll make.

it's up to you whether you want to co-operate, but cooperation is a 2 way street.
