Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

a debt collector purchased a loan that had gone default. benefical credit was the company i owed. Ihave not had any contact with benefical at all Ihave been paying to the debt collector...out of the blue i get a 1099-c from the collector but when i call them about it they say i still owe the debt, please help
