Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Old Debt

I am an instructor of personal finance at a local university in Jacksonville, FL. One of my students presented an interesting question regarding old debt. She advised that she still has bad debts appearing on her credit report that were incurred before she was 18 years old? Her question was is she still liable for debt incurred before she was legally able to enter into a contract.

I would appreciate a timely response to this message as I hope to provide the information to her in an upcoming session. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Re: Old Debt

Her liablility would depend on the type of debt and whether she affirmed the debt after reaching 18. Her minority may be a defense to any suit. Her credit report goes back 7 years and will not be deleted.
