Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida
Is a debt prior to getting a credit history, still collectible?
When I first came to America (May 2004.I'm from England) I had urgent treatment at a hospital.I was in a lot of pain.I was at the hospital about 5 hours.I signed one form quickly.I just wanted the pain to stop.It was not explained that the bills would all be separate and I was not given any idea of the costs. Coming from England, I was not aware of the health costs here.A week after my treatment, which consequently solved nothing,I received the bills. It was a lot of money.$2,124.98.That was just to be in the hospital! Then a short time after this all the separate bills started coming in.$300.00 for 1 test,$17.00 for another.$149.00 for another and so on,then more bills.I paid all but one bill. The one from the doctor which arrived later, for $358.00.I could not afford to pay it.Since then I have kept recieving debt collection letters.I now have a SS# and have a credit rating.I went to get a credit card and was refused because of no credit history and the debt.A collection agency have put this debt onto my credit. Is this legal as at the start of the debt,I had not applied to stay in the USA, had no SS# or credit.I had only just arrived and was not sure if I was staying.I now have bad credit.Do you think my hospital costs were too high?

I am not competent to voice an opinion as to the reasonableness of the hospital costs involved.
