Debt Relief

Are these Debt Relief companies that advertise on TV ligitimate? If so, how does doing this affect your credit and your credit score? Is it better, worse or about the same as having 60 to 90 days late payments on your credit. I already have a low credit score, too low to qualify for a mortgage, in the 500's. If I do this how long does this stay on my credit report?
