Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

I went to the dentist and paid him the full amount that he asked me to pay for the dental work that he performed. About a month later my dental insurance company sent me checks that I thought were reimbursement checks. Now my dentist is saying that those checks were supposed to go to him. I was not the one who filled and sent in any claim forms. I have to think that they were sent by the dentist. Am I legally responsible for giving him the money that the insurance company sent to me. I am submitting this question under Debt Law, but I really do not know under which area of the law this question qualifies. Please help.

If you paid the full dental bill when it was presented to you, and the insurance check is made payable to you, then I can't help but conclude that the money from the insurance company is yours.

You are not legally responsible to hand-over the money to the dentist unless he can prove to you, on paper, why he is still owed any money at all from you or your insurance company.

The question here is did you just pay the dentist your co-payment. If that is all you paid, then you do owe him the money. Want to know the law without going to law school?
