Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida
Driver's License Lien
I recently moved to MN from IL and applied for a drivers license. I passed the test and paid the fee. When I didn't receive the license in 2-3 weeks I called the DMV and found out that there was a lien against my license due to an accident I had in 1987 in Palm Beach County, FL while I was a FL resident with a valid driver's license. I was uninsured and the insurance company for the other party, State Farm, said I owed $2,983 to pay for damages to the other car. I never received notification of a lien although I have located a copy of the judgment on the Internet. It was recorded in February 1992, 7 months after I moved to Illinois.
State Farm has been my insurer since 1991. I was able to get an IL drivers license without indication of a lien. When I found out about it I contacted my insurance agent: the claim is no longer on their books but the lien was never removed. I spoke to the FL attorney named on the judgment and received a letter demanding a $3,000 cashiers check payable to the attorney, not to State Farm, plus one for $15 payable to the State of Florida DMV. It doesnt sound right since the judgment lists the attorney fee as $94.50. What is my best recourse for getting the lien removed from my license?

Re: Driver's License Lien
I would need to demand documentation and do a document research procedure to verify or challenge the lien validity.
I would charge hourly for that @ my rate of $ 350.00/hour.
