Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida
I had an emergency room visit where I received 3 or 4 stitches for a cut chin, an IV and a catheter. My stay was for approximately 10 hrs. My bill is for $21,383.00, which is now in collections. This amount seems very excessive to me and was curious to know if this is worth investigating further and find some way of mitigating this cost or do I have to bite the bullet and pay this ridiculous amount?

You should demand proof of any agreement that you signed.
You should ask for a detailed statement of the services they are charging for.
If you object to the amount owed, they might file a suit. It would only be a civil case, never a criminal matter.
If they sue, you could raise defense challenging the amount if you have good faith reason.

Mr. Rosenblum is correct. More than likely they took an x ray or did an MRI or CT scan which is all very expensive. ONce you get an itemized bill for what they charged you for (and they will charge you for the itemized bill), then you will know better where you stand. If you do not have funds to pay apply for the charity at the hospital.
