Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Joint account held responsible for individual account debt

My ex and I had a joint savings

account with a credit union. My ex

also opened an individual checking

account that was associated with the

savings account. A portion of my

checks was directly deposited into the

savings account and stood as the

only deposits for the account. When

we broke up, I stopped the direct

deposit and continued to use the

checking account I had with another

bank. My ex subsequently

overdrafted the checking account.

Since my name was still on the

savings account, the credit union is

attempting to make me responsible

for the debt. Would they be able to

make me pay the debt if I didn't have

any of the benefits associated with

the checking account?
