First the finance company must tell you the outstanding balance, send you a letter allowing you to pay it off, or they will auction or private sale the car. Then they must sell the car at a reasonable price. Many times the finance companies fail to do this and you may have the ability to beat the debt owned and also have a claim against them. Check with your friends and see if any want to assume the payments. All they need to go is call the finance company and they will make the arrangements.
