Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

I took out a loan of 10,000 years ago to help out a friend. It was a mistake because that person is no longer a friend and I do not know their whereabouts. I forgot about the loan until recently someone from a collection agency showed up at my door. When I took out the loan I was single and doing rather well. Now, I am a single mother fallen on hard time and have a young daughter to raise. Do I have any options? Please help me.
