Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

I had a membership with planet Fitness in 2006, two months later I wanted to cancel my membership because the staff was so rude, I call them and told them the situation the Rep told me to write a certified letter then they could cancel my membership. I did just that but they never did such thing but still billed me. I call them several time about the matter until I had to close my credit card.I never received letters or billed from about the matter, I later checked my credit report Planet Fitness had send me to collection for $149.00, That amount been on my report for three years because I did't feel I that I owed this money after so many attempt I made trying to close my membership with them. I finally called their collection agency to see if they could lower the payment to at least $95.00, I was told that i better pay the full amount or they will increase the $149.00 to $300.00. well I receive a bill from them recently for $287.00. my question is can they increase the amount and treating to send me to collection even though I'm already in collection with them for 149.00? please help

yes - your contract that you signed with Planet Fitness probably has a collection fee or at the very least a late fee for every month you are late.

This may be a violation of the FDCPA and you should see an attorney with all of your documents. See also my website on collection matters and also the sample letters section to sent to the credit bureaus. Want to know the law?
