can a collection agency garnish my compensation?

Such compensation is probably exempt from garnishment. Therefore my answer is no. However being exempt does not mean the creditor cannot try to so. If it does, then you must request the court to quash the garnishment, return what monies may have been tyaken and possibly sue for damages under the FDCPA and related laws.
