Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Minor Debt Responsibility

When I was 17, my mother forced me to open up a city utility account for our home. The city checked my ID when I opened it, and did not notice that I was still a minor. My mother never paid the bill. Now, I have a collection on my account because of this. Am I responsible for this debt since I was a minor at the time the account was opened?

Re: Minor Debt Responsibility

Minors in the Commonwealth of Virginia(and I assume the same is true of Florida) may disaffirm or disavow their contracts unless these agreements are for what the law considers the so-called "necessaries of life". If the utility which was opened in your name was for such a "necessary", then you would likely owe the bill and could not now disavow it having reached your majority.
