In civil court, the Plaintiff can sue for treble damages which is three times the amount of the original check plus the original amount for a total of 4 times the amount. Additionally, the Plaintiff is entitled to an award for court costs and attorney's fees for prosecuting the matter.

Criminal penalties are based on the amount of the check.
