can a pay day loan company call your employer and try to get them to garnish wages for a pay day loan or do they have to get a court order to do so first?

A creditor calling your employer is a no no. Unless you signed away your rights -- the devil is in the details of the agreement-- the answer is no, they cannot call and garnish.
